Russia has invited Prime Minister Modi to join the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9

Russia has formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, which this year marks the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II. The invitation was confirmed by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko on Tuesday.

According to Russian news agency Tass, Rudenko said, “It’s being worked out, it should be this year. He has an invitation.” Talks are ongoing between India and Russia, and Moscow is optimistic about Modi’s presence at the event.

Victory Day is an important annual celebration in Russia, featuring a military parade and honoring the country’s historic victory in 1945. Leaders from other allied or “friendly” nations have also been invited to attend this year’s event.

Prime Minister Modi last visited Russia in July 2024—his first visit in nearly five years—where he had wide-ranging discussions with President Vladimir Putin. During that visit, he invited Putin to visit India, an offer that was accepted, though no specific dates have been set.

Modi and Putin continue to stay in regular touch, often speaking by phone and meeting during international summits.
