Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast is in discussions with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) and the Adani Group for potential collaborations as it prepares to launch its cars in India.
According to The Times of India, the company has not yet decided whether to participate in India’s new EV policy, which offers import tax incentives to companies investing $500 million in local manufacturing.
VinFast is currently establishing a production facility in Tamil Nadu and is evaluating local partnerships to secure capital and navigate regulatory challenges. Partnering with Indian firms is also seen as crucial for managing labor relations and building a robust, cost-effective supplier ecosystem.
Sources suggest that while talks with MEIL and Adani are ongoing, no definitive joint venture agreement has been reached. A VinFast spokesperson in India stated that the company is exploring global collaboration opportunities but declined to comment on specific negotiations.
VinFast plans to commence electric car production at its Tamil Nadu facility by 2025, with its vehicles slated to be showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo early next year. Although the company initially expressed interest in India’s EV policy, it is now cautious about committing fully due to the policy’s complexities and the ongoing development of its manufacturing plant.
