CBDT has extended the ITR filing deadline from July 31 to September 15, 2025

On May 27, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced an extension of the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26. The due date has been pushed from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025.

The Income Tax Department shared the update via a post on the X platform, citing multiple reasons for the extension. These include major revisions in the ITR forms, the need for system updates, and the time required for TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) credit information to reflect properly.

According to the statement, the newly notified ITR forms have been structurally and content-wise revised to simplify compliance, ensure transparency, and allow more accurate reporting. Because of these extensive changes, extra time is needed for updating systems, testing new utilities, and ensuring they work smoothly.

Additionally, since TDS statements are due by May 31, 2025, their credits will only start showing up in early June. Without an extension, taxpayers would have a limited window to file their returns with complete data.

To ensure a smooth and convenient filing experience, CBDT decided to extend the ITR deadline. A formal notification confirming this decision will be issued soon.
